Problem solved--I checked to see if my Windows Audio Drivers needed to be updated--they did. After a reboot the problem was solved. Thanks for the help!

I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm running Halo Combat Evolved not Custom Edition.

When I try to enter the console command you gave me, I get this message:

Requested function "multiplayer_hit_sound_volume" cannot be executed now.

Since I installed the latest Windows 10 update, my Halo Combat Evolved game sounds have changed. There is no longer a sound when you hit or kill an opponent with a shot, no longer a sound when you get hit by a shot, and the sounds of the sniper rifle and rocket launcher firing have changed.
