Today was the first time that all 5 stormsurge barriers in The Netherlands had to be closed at the same time.
This included the Oosterscheldedam, one of the worlds largest, and the Maeslandkering. This is a special type of barrier .As it protects the entrence to Rotterdan harbour, narrowing the passage and use drop doors , like was done in de Oosterschelde kering, wasn't an option.
Insted it was constructed with two giant, moving doors that actually float out of the banks and are then flooded , so they sink and almost completely block the Nieuwe Waterweg.
Each of the two arms is fixed on a 10 meter ballbearing (about 30ft) so it can swing out and up and down.
Each door is about the size of the Eiffeltower, when put on it's side.

65 years ago the South West part of The Netherlands was hit by large scale flooding.
Around midnight several sea and river dykes broke during a heavy storm and 1852 people lost their lives.
High tides made the situation even worse.

The dykes where in bad condition because of bad maintanence, partly due to WW2.

In the aftermath of this flood the construction of several flood barriers and improvement of the dykes, the so called Delta Works, was ordered .
The barriers mentioned in my previous post are part of these Delta Works.

Vox I find that to be an amazing feat of engineering. Thank you for sharing that. Have they failed ever? Have you seen this done ?

The new dykes and barriers haven't failed since being constructed.
In the Ninety's we had flooding in the South East because there had been a great focus on the Delta Works and the river dykes in that part of the country where behind shedule. I've seen the Oosterschelde and Maesland kering being build, it's quite impressive.
