Battle of Baltimore
British bombard Fort McHenry for 27 hours during the Battle of Baltimore. Their failure to capture it is a turning point in the War of 1812. The Royal Navy's bombardment inspired Francis Scott Key to compose the poem "
Defence of Fort McHenry," which is now well known as the "
The Star-Spangled Banner" (U.S. National anthem).
