Change to Halo CE game sounds after latest Windows 10 update

Post by raulman1 »

Since I installed the latest Windows 10 update, my Halo Combat Evolved game sounds have changed. There is no longer a sound when you hit or kill an opponent with a shot, no longer a sound when you get hit by a shot, and the sounds of the sniper rifle and rocket launcher firing have changed. Has anyone else experienced this?

It seems bizarre that an OS update should affect game sounds, but there hasn't been an update to Halo to my knowledge recently, and I only experienced this after the latest Windows 10 update.

I don't know if this will help but I had this issue when I updated my windows 7. I ended up reinstalling halo for the sounds to come back.

Halo is really old so the newer your operating system is the more compatibility problems you'll have. I doubt this will really solve any issues that you're having but the default hit sound in halo is really low and you can change that in the console by typing multiplayer_hit_sound_volume 20. This will turn up the sound you hear when a shot registers on another player. This sound is something that a lot of the better players rely heavily on because it lets them know what shots are registering and what shots are missing. You do have to type it into the console every single time you run halo though and I've not been able to find a way to only put it in once.

@WillRock,

How do you access the console?

Thanks,

I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm running Halo Combat Evolved not Custom Edition.

When I try to enter the console command you gave me, I get this message:

Requested function "multiplayer_hit_sound_volume" cannot be executed now.

Thanks for your help.

I forgot, it only works with Halo Custom Edition.

Problem solved--I checked to see if my Windows Audio Drivers needed to be updated--they did. After a reboot the problem was solved. Thanks for the help!

I have a way of only having to do it once. Outside the Halo Custom Edition folder, make a text file called "init.txt" (you'll have to make it outside the folder, then copy it in, otherwise Windows won't let you save it to the folder). Once you have created it, open it up and type in whatever console commands you want in it, which would be "multiplayer_hit_sound 20". Save it, then move it to the Halo Custom Edition folder. Every time you open up Halo CE, the game will automatically load the commands (hence "init" being "initialize").

Hope this helps.
