For me, a troll is that thing that lives under the bridge, and trolling is what you do out on the lake when you drag your fishing lines behind you and putter along slowly with a drink in hand.

Aye. Trolling is dragging lines behind you, trawling is dragging a net. Since it's all small lakes near here, we just spend all day trolling and leave the trawling to the folks on the coast.
