Hostnames, please use them. They're better than IP addresses

Post by A§H»Crash »

This post is especially for SÕNOR, who enjoy memorizing 32 bit numbers instead

For the most part, we try and leave the IP addresses of everything alone when we run our Halo servers and other facilities of the clan. Though, from time to time the Leaders will have to change the IP addresses and it may cause some problems for some people. One of the prime examples being the TS server changing IP addresses last week.

If you all want the latest and greatest connections to our servers, regardless of IP addresses, please use the hostnames for our facilities. They're simple, easy to remember, and will always reflect the working IP addresses for our facilities.

The hostname for the TeamSpeak server is: ts.armoredsaintsofhalo.com

That's it. If we were to ever change the IP address to the TS server like we did last week, you wouldn't have even known if you were using the hostname like people should. We automatically update the hostname to reflect the IP address that works for it's purpose (which is connecting people to our TS server).

Now, for the technical explanations for those of you who care:
The hostnames are another incredibly useful component in the information technology department of our clan that helps people from having to remember cruddy IP addresses. When you connect to something via hostname, your computer and ISP work together to contact a DNS (domain name server) to resolve the IP address behind the hostname, which is found on the DNS servers we run through our web server provider.

Once it's resolved the IP address we assigned it in our DNS, your computer then uses that IP address to connect to whatever you used the hostname to connect to, and it typically works. I say typically because there's no guarantee the IP address supplied in the DNS records of the server being contacted are correct. This is mainly due to host error, meaning it was probably my fault or another Leaders fault that we didn't update our DNS records to reflect the latest IP address changes in our clan. This is a rare case though.

For more mumbo jumbo, technical Crash talk. Hit me up on TeamSpeak after you've CONNECTED WITH THE HOSTNAME, LOL.
Thanks all!

Cheers,
Jack

I still use the IP. :P I was wondering what that pop up was all about. When I get home I'll make sure to get the host name ;)
