Texas Teen Faces 8 Years in Prison for a 'Joke'

A Texas teenager who has been in jail since March faces an eight-year prison sentence because of a threatening joke he made while playing an online video game.

In February, Justin Carter was playing “League of Legends” — an online, multiplayer fantasy game — when another player wrote a comment calling him insane. Carter’s response, which he now deeply regrets, was intended as joke.

“He replied ‘Oh yeah, I’m real messed up in the head, I’m going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts,’ and the next two lines were lol and jk,” said Jack Carter, Justin’s father, in a statement to a local news channel.

The statements “lol” and “jk” — meaning “laughing out loud” and “just kidding” — indicate that Justin’s statement was entirely sarcastic, said his father.

For for him. Another reason why I don't play League of Nations.... Jk. Oh no!

It's déjà vu all over again... Yeah I shouldn't joke about this stuff. The 8years in prison does seem outrageous and uncalled for. There's probably a huge reason for that. I'll read the article to see if it leaves any reasons as to why such a hard punishment.

Unrealisticly harsh but on the other hand not so
bright either....
Calling stuff like that in a country where stuff like that
really happens ( the shooting, that is..) is asking for
trouble.
Just because your on "the net" doesn't mean you can just
shout anything...

a conversation with some people who lost
loved one's this way would be my punishment...

That's a brilliant idea. That would be more effective that prison, especially for someone his age.

Jeez that sounds like pycologically tormenting someone to the extreme. I think the poor fellow would rather go to jail. That would be like evil or somethen

It's not torment...just letting him
realise what he was joking about.
It isn't ment to break him or something...
plus he doesn't get a" jailtime" punishment on his
record...in years to come people like employers
will see"jailtime" and go :" no thanks" and it will not
be a difference that it was for a bad joke.

That doesn't change the fact that there's some
serious over reacting happening here.
